(My 6x6 collages made with exchanged materials)
When I first began working in collage back in 2008, I joined two groups on Flickr: Collage a Day (which I faithfully posted new work to almost daily) and the International 6x6 Collage Group, which ended up being a wonderful challenge: exchange collage materials with another artist, and create six 6x6 collages with the items they send you.
What's so great about working with materials that you didn't choose is that it forces you to think differently. A lot of the time you don't "like" everything you get. Most of the time you aren't inspired at all by the papers sitting in front of you, or worse: you like the stuff, but are at a complete loss as to what to do with it. I have to say: everything I've made for the 6x6 collage group has been something I never would have made on my own. And I love that!
Is anyone up for joining me in a materials exchange?
Ideally I'd like to swap with about three people.. sending and receiving about a manilla folder's worth of stuff (paper, wallpaper, fabric, discarded art, photographs, ephemera, whatever). And I'm happy to exchange internationally. Send me an email if you're interested!
(Update: I've got three partners now, yay! Stay tuned in the next few weeks for some collages.)
